cleaning service checklist

A cleaning service checklist is the list of tasks a cleaner works through on every job: prepare the visit, then clean the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas and floors in a set order, add any deep clean extras, and finish with a walk-through, photos and payment. Using one list for every job keeps quality consistent and makes pricing simple.

Key takeaways

  • Work top to bottom and dry to wet, and finish each room at the door, so you never re-clean a surface.
  • Write a separate list for each service you sell: regular, deep, end of tenancy and short-let turnover.
  • The checklist is your promise to the client. Anything not on it isn’t included, which ends most arguments before they start.
  • Never mix cleaning products, and give cleaners gloves and good ventilation.
  • The job ends with a walk-through, after photos, payment and the next clean booked.

Why a written cleaning service checklist matters

Ask three clients what “a clean” means and you’ll get three answers. One expects the oven done, another wants the windows inside and out, and a third only cares about the bathroom. A written list settles that before you arrive, not on the doorstep afterwards.

It does three more jobs for the business. It trains new cleaners, because they follow the same steps as you. It lets you price by time, because you know how long each list takes. And it’s the start of a standard operating procedure that lets the business run without you on every job. Our guide on how to start a cleaning business explains how to set up your service list; this page is the full checklist to go with it.

The complete cleaning service checklist

Safety rules that belong on every checklist

Cleaning products can hurt people. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s COSHH guidance for cleaners (checked on 1 October 2026) says some ingredients can cause skin allergies and asthma, some products are corrosive and can burn skin and eyes, and hands that are wet for long periods can develop dermatitis. It recommends gloves and eye protection where needed, good hand care and a well-ventilated workplace.

The US CDC’s home cleaning guidance (checked on 1 October 2026) adds two points worth putting on the list: clean before you disinfect, because cleaning removes most dirt and germs, and never mix products or chemicals with each other. Mixing bleach with other cleaners can release harmful gases. Make “never mix products” the first line every new cleaner learns.

Worked example: pricing a regular clean from the checklist

Once you’ve timed the list, you can price it properly. The figures below are illustrative, so set your own from your costs.

A three-bedroom flat in Lekki, Lagos, with two bathrooms, takes two cleaners about three hours on the regular list: 6 cleaner hours.

ItemAmount
Labour: 6 hours at ₦3,000 an hour₦18,000
Products and consumables₦3,000
Transport₦4,000
Direct cost per clean₦25,000
Price per clean (to leave room for overheads and profit)₦40,000
Fortnightly plan, 26 cleans a year₦1,040,000 a year

Add an oven clean at ₦10,000 and inside cupboards at ₦8,000 as extras. A London client on the same list, with three hours for one cleaner at £20 an hour, would pay £60 per clean, or £1,560 a year fortnightly. Regular plans like these are recurring revenue: you know what’s coming in each month and can plan staff around it.

Common mistakes with cleaning checklists

  • One list for every service. A deep clean and a regular clean are different jobs; write a list for each.
  • No time against the list. If you don’t know how long it takes, you can’t price it.
  • Skipping the “before” photos. Without them, it’s your word against the client’s on existing damage.
  • Moving clients’ belongings out of sight. Put things back where they were.
  • Leaving payment for later. It’s easiest to get paid while you’re still there.
  • Not booking the next clean. Clients mean to call back and rarely do.

Use this cleaning service checklist on every job

Copy the list above into your job sheet, print this page for your kit bag, or set it up in startbuddi as described below. If you also run maintenance visits for homeowners, the home service checklist covers those. For ways to fill your calendar, read how to get more clients for a cleaning business.

How to do this cleaning service checklist in startbuddi

startbuddi doesn’t do the cleaning. It handles the work around it: booking, the checklist as tasks, the client record and getting paid.

Services in Bookings: each bookable service shows its length and whether it is active, and Create Service adds a new one
  1. Set up each service. In Bookings, open Services and click Create Service for “Regular clean”, “Deep clean” and “End of tenancy”. Paste a summary of the checklist into the description, and set the duration and price. Turn on “Require payment to book” to take a deposit or the full amount.
  2. Ask the right questions. Add booking questions such as number of bedrooms and bathrooms, pets and access instructions. Answers can be saved to the client’s contact record.
  3. Save the checklist as a task with subtasks. In Work, open My work, add a task called “Regular clean”, and use “+ Add subtask” for each section of the list. Assign it to the cleaner doing the job.
  4. Keep notes on the client. Each client is a contact in Customers, with the full history of bookings, messages and invoices, and notes for keys, pets and preferences.
  5. Get paid on the day. Generate an invoice from the booking, or send a payment link from Money Manager. Clients pay by card, bank transfer, USSD or mobile money through Paystack, or by card through Stripe.

Frequently asked questions

What should be on a cleaning service checklist?

A cleaning service checklist should cover preparation, the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms and living areas, floors and the handover. Typical tasks are wiping surfaces and high-touch points, cleaning the sink, toilet and shower, dusting high to low, and vacuuming and mopping last. Deep clean and end of tenancy extras, such as inside the oven and cupboards, go in their own sections.

In what order should you clean a house?

Work top to bottom and dry to wet: dust before you wipe, and wipe before you mop. Start products working in the bathroom first, clean the rest of the room while they work, and finish every room at the door. Do floors last so you don't walk over clean areas.

What is the difference between a regular clean and a deep clean?

A regular clean keeps a home tidy and hygienic: surfaces, bathrooms, dusting and floors. A deep clean adds the jobs done every few months, such as inside the oven and fridge, inside cupboards, descaling, skirting boards and high dusting. Deep cleans take longer and should be priced separately.

Is there a cleaning service checklist PDF?

You can copy the checklist on this page into your own document or job sheet, or print the page. Many cleaning businesses keep one checklist per service and share it with clients when they book, so everyone agrees what's included.

How long does a standard home clean take?

It depends on the size of the home, its condition and how many bathrooms it has. A regular clean of a two or three-bedroom home can take anywhere from three to six cleaner hours. Time your own list on a few jobs and price from those times.

Should cleaners bring their own products?

Many cleaning businesses bring their own products and equipment, so quality is consistent and the cost is built into the price. Ask clients about allergies and any products they want used or avoided. Label every refilled bottle and never mix products.
