Before you choose: check the business register

A domain and a handle are easy to change. A registered name is the one you can't work around, so search it first.

    Nigeria

Search the name on the Corporate Affairs Commission's portal, then reserve it before you register.

    CAC public search

    United Kingdom

Search Companies House for company names already registered, and read GOV.UK's rules on names you can't use.

How this business name generator works

    Tell it what you do

Pick your trade and add up to three words of your own, such as your name, your area or a word you like.

    Pick a style

Classic, modern, playful, local, premium or short. Each one mixes your words with a different set of patterns and word lists.

    Save, then check

Save the names you like, press More like this to explore one, then check the domain, handles and your business register.

How to pick a good business name

A generator gives you volume. The good name is the one that passes a few simple tests. Run each name on your shortlist through these before you decide.

    • Say it, spell it, find it. Say the name as if you were answering the phone. Someone hearing it once should be able to spell it and find you online.
    • Hint at what you do. "Steady Books" suggests bookkeeping. A name that doesn't, such as "Lantern", needs a short tagline beside it.
    • Leave room to grow. A name tied to one street or one service can feel small when you move or add services.
    • Keep it short. Two or three words, ideally under 15 letters for the domain and the handle.
    • Skip numbers, hyphens and odd spellings. They cost you every time someone types your name.
    • Check meanings and neighbours. Make sure the name means nothing awkward in the languages your clients speak, and that it doesn't sound like a competitor near you.

Then score your top three and check each one with your registry, a domain search and the social apps. Our guide on how to name your business walks through the full method, with a word bank, eight naming patterns, 100+ examples and a scoring sheet.

    Questions

Is this business name generator free?

Yes. It is free with no account and no limit: add your first name and email once and it opens on this device. You can make as many batches as you like, save the names you like and copy them. The names are made in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to us.

Does it check whether a name is available?

No. We don't check availability, so treat every result as an idea. Each name has links to search the .com domain and the main social handles, and the tips on this page link to the official business registers in Nigeria, the UK and the US.

How does the generator come up with names?

It mixes your own words with word lists for your trade and the styles you pick, using simple patterns: your word plus your trade, a describing word plus your trade, alliteration, blends, compounds, local words and short made-up words. Every result goes through a filter that removes awkward and offensive combinations.

Can I use a name I find here?

Yes, the ideas are yours to use. Some may already be used by another business, so search your business register, trademarks, domains and social handles before you print anything or pay for a logo.

What makes a good small business name?

One that is easy to say on the phone, easy to spell after hearing it once, and hints at what you do. Keep it to two or three words, avoid numbers and odd spellings, and make sure it still fits if you add a service or move area.

How do I register my business name?

In Nigeria you search and reserve the name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), then register. In the UK you register a limited company with Companies House, or simply trade under a name as a sole trader. In the US you register with your state, usually the Secretary of State, and file a DBA if you trade under another name.
