startbuddi is our product. It’s in this list with its limits written as plainly as everyone else’s.
Key takeaways
- Decide first whether you’re a walk-in shop, an appointment shop or both. Only a few apps handle a walk-in queue well.
- Chair renters change the maths. Some apps charge per barber, some per shop, and some let each renter run their own free account.
- Marketplace apps bring new clients but can take a cut of the first visit. If your chair fills from Instagram and WhatsApp, you may be paying for reach you don’t need.
- Deposits are the most reliable cure for no-shows, so check the app can take one in your country, by a payment method your clients use.

How we chose
We looked for apps a barbershop could set up without an IT person, and judged them on what actually costs barbers money and time:
- Walk-ins and appointments: can the app run both, or only booked slots?
- No-show protection: deposits, card on file, cancellation fees and reminders.
- Chair renters: how the price works when each barber is their own business.
- Client records: notes on a client’s usual cut, history and contact details.
- True cost: subscription, per-barber charges, text messages and marketplace fees.
- Where it works: which countries the vendor sells in and takes payments in.
Every price comes from the vendor’s own pricing, help or terms pages, read on 14 October 2026. We didn’t run hands-on tests and we don’t quote review scores. Squire, a barber-only app many shops use, is left out because its pricing page wouldn’t load for us, and we won’t print prices we couldn’t check on the vendor’s own site.
1. Booksy
Booksy is a booking app with a consumer marketplace, and it’s one of the names barbers mention most. Clients download the Booksy app, find you, and book.
Best for: barbers in the US, UK, Ireland, parts of Europe and South Africa who want new clients from an app as well as their regulars.
Key features
- One plan with everything: “No-Show Protection features”, waitlists, custom forms and liability waivers.
- Client cards on file, prepayments and cancellation policies, listed on its barber page.
- Appointment confirmations and reminders that Booksy says “are always free”.
Pricing: Booksy’s US pricing page lists “$29.99 per month + tax”, with extra users at “$20/month each” and a 14-day trial. The UK page lists £40 a month plus VAT, extra users £5 and a 7-day trial. US plans include 2,000 SMS marketing messages a month; the UK allowance is 500, then 5p each. Boost, the optional marketplace promotion, takes a one-time 30% fee on a Boost client’s first visit, up to $100 in the US; the UK page gives a £5 minimum and no cap. Card payments are charged separately, at the rates on Booksy’s pricing page.
Pros
- Simple single plan, and cheap extra users in the UK.
- A marketplace clients actually use in Booksy’s countries.
Cons
- In the US, each extra barber adds $20 a month, which matters in a busy shop.
- Boost fees are high on an expensive first service if you switch it on.
- No version for Nigeria, Kenya or Ghana.
Skip it if you’re outside Booksy’s countries, or your chair is already full from regulars. Our Booksy alternatives post compares the options in more detail.
2. theCut
theCut is a booking app built only for barbers, with a client app where people search for barbers near them.
Best for: independent US barbers who want a genuinely free start, and shop owners managing renters.
Key features
- A free barber plan with a booking link, “no-show protection” and mobile payments.
- Individual client notes and recurring appointments for regulars.
- A free Shop account for owners, with “Booth Rent Tracking & Reminders” and a way to “quickly assign walk-in clients to available team members”.
Pricing: theCut’s pricing page lists Free at $0 a month and Pro at $25 a month, with a 30-day Pro trial. On Free, new clients that the marketplace sends you cost “$10 per client”; on Pro that’s included. Free reminders go by push and email; Pro adds SMS. Custom cancellation and no-show policies per client are a Pro feature.
Pros
- Made for barbering: walk-ins, renters and recurring cuts are all in view.
- The owner’s Shop account costs nothing.
Cons
- Its site is aimed at US barbers; we couldn’t confirm which other countries it serves.
- SMS reminders need Pro.
- The $10 per marketplace client on Free adds up if discovery works well for you.
Skip it if you’re outside the US or you need a full till with retail stock.
3. Square Appointments
Square Appointments is Square’s booking app, tied to its card readers and point of sale.
Best for: barbers in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, France, Spain or Japan who want a free plan and already like Square’s hardware.
Key features
- “Unlimited staff calendars” on the free plan: Square says “there is no employee limit”.
- Online booking site and automatic text and email reminders on every plan.

In the UK, Plus is £29 and Premium £69 a month per location. Card payments are charged per transaction; see Square’s own fees page.
Pros
- A free plan that covers a whole shop’s calendars.
- Readers, tap to pay and point of sale from the same company.
Cons
- Cancellation policies and no-show fees need Plus.
- Text marketing isn’t available on Free.
- No African country version.
Skip it if you trade outside Square’s countries. The startbuddi vs Square Appointments comparison goes deeper if you’re choosing between the two.
4. startbuddi
startbuddi is an all-in-one workspace for service businesses. Bookings sits next to a client list, an inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram and email, and invoices, so a client’s bookings, messages and payments are on one record.
Best for: barbers and barbershops in Nigeria and across Africa who take deposits, talk to clients on WhatsApp and want one place for bookings, clients and money.
Key features
- A booking page with your services and prices in NGN, USD, GBP, EUR, KES, ZAR or GHS, shared as a link, QR code or WhatsApp message.
- Require payment to book: take the full price or a deposit before the slot is confirmed. With Paystack, clients pay by card, bank transfer, USSD or mobile money; with Stripe, by card. The slot is held for 30 minutes while they pay.
- A personal booking page for each barber, each barber’s own hours, and round robin so “next available barber” bookings are shared out. See round robin scheduling if that’s new to you.
- Max bookings per day on a service, plus Block time for lunch, training or a day off, which helps protect walk-in hours.
- An automatic reminder at the time you choose, by email, or by WhatsApp or SMS once those are set up, and an “after a no-show” follow-up email.
- Every booking creates or updates the client’s record, with notes, and you can generate an invoice from a booking.

Pricing: a free plan is available; see pricing. The free plan has one live service, so a shop with a full price list needs a paid plan.
Pros
- Deposits in naira with the payment methods Nigerian clients actually use.
- WhatsApp conversations, booking history and invoices on the same client record.
- No marketplace, so no fee on new clients.
Cons
- No walk-in queue or check-in screen. You can add a walk-in as a booking, but there’s no live waiting list.
- No recurring bookings, so a regular who comes every two weeks books each visit.
- No booth rent tracking, tips, commissions or payroll for barbers.
- No card terminal, till or retail stock.
- On a phone you get the overview and your booking links; managing the calendar is done on a computer or tablet.
- Calendar sync pushes bookings to Google Calendar but doesn’t read your busy times.
Skip it if your shop runs mostly on walk-ins, you rent chairs and need rent collection, or you want a marketplace to send you clients. Read more about startbuddi Bookings.

Each plan includes 20 free text or WhatsApp messages a month (per team member on Team), then NGN 46 to NGN 300 per WhatsApp message. In many countries, a one-time commission applies to brand-new clients who find you through the marketplace; Fresha’s pricing FAQ says you aren’t charged for new clients who come through your own website or social pages.
Pros
- Cheap per barber, with most features on both plans.
- Sells in many countries, including Nigeria in naira.
Cons
- When we loaded the page from Nigeria, Fresha’s own payment features showed as unavailable for that country, so deposits and no-show charges may not work there.
- Extra messages, loyalty and insights are paid extras.
Skip it if you’re in Nigeria and need deposits taken in the app. Our Fresha alternatives post covers the other side.

How to choose the best booking app for barbers
Work through these in order. Each one rules out a few apps.
- Walk-ins, appointments or both? A walk-in shop needs a queue or check-in screen (theCut’s walk-in assignment, Vagaro’s Check-In App add-on). An appointment-only barber can use almost anything here.
- Employees or chair renters? If renters each run their own business, a per-barber app means each renter pays their own subscription, or you pay it and recharge them. A per-shop or free-per-member price is simpler.
- Can it take a deposit where you are? This is the filter that matters most outside the US and UK. Check the payment country list, not just the sign-up page.
- Do you want a marketplace? If you do, budget for new-client fees. If your chair fills from regulars, Instagram and WhatsApp, skip the marketplace and the fee.
- Who looks after regulars? Recurring appointments and client notes (the fade, the guard number, the beard line) save time every week.
Here’s how the setup choice usually falls out:
| Your shop | What to prioritise | Apps that fit |
|---|---|---|
| Solo barber, appointment only, US | Free plan, deposits, client notes | theCut, Square Appointments, GlossGenius |
| Shop with employed barbers | Staff calendars, reminders, one bill | Square Appointments, Vagaro, Timely, Fresha |
| Shop with chair renters | Per-renter accounts or rent tracking | theCut (Shop account), Booksy, StyleSeat |
| Walk-in heavy shop | Queue or check-in, daily caps | theCut, Vagaro with Check-In App |
| Barber in Nigeria or Africa | Deposits by transfer or USSD, WhatsApp | startbuddi, SimplyBook.me |
What a deposit is worth to a barber: a worked example
These numbers are illustrative. A Lagos barber does 30 booked cuts a week at ₦8,000, and 3 clients a week don’t show.
- Lost each week with no deposit: 3 × ₦8,000 = ₦24,000.
- With a 50% deposit, kept on a no-show: 3 × ₦4,000 = ₦12,000 recovered, so the loss halves to ₦12,000.
- Over a four-week month, that’s ₦48,000 recovered.
In practice, deposits also make people turn up, so the number of no-shows usually drops too. Our deposit calculator runs the sums with your own prices, and the post on how much deposit to charge clients helps you set the amount. Pair it with a written policy: the no-show policy template is ready to copy, and reminders are covered in how to automate appointment reminders.
Is there a free booking app for barbers?
Yes. theCut has a free barber plan with a booking link and no-show protection in the US. Square Appointments’ free plan covers unlimited staff calendars in Square’s countries. Setmore is free for up to four users, SimplyBook.me for 50 bookings a month, and startbuddi has a free plan with one live service. Free plans usually leave out no-show fees, text reminders or extra services.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best booking app for barbers?
For barbers in the US and Europe who want new clients from an app, Booksy is the most common choice. Independent US barbers on a budget should look at theCut's free plan. In Nigeria and much of Africa, pick an app that takes deposits through a local provider such as Paystack, such as startbuddi.
What booking app do most barbers use?
Booksy, theCut, Squire and Square Appointments are the names barbers mention most in the US, and Fresha and Booksy are common in the UK. Which one is "most used" depends on the country, so check what clients in your area already have on their phones.
Is Booksy worth it for barbers?
It can be, if the marketplace brings clients who come back. The US plan is $29.99 a month plus $20 for each extra user, and Boost takes 30% of a new client's first visit, up to $100. If your book is already full, a cheaper app without a marketplace may suit you better.
Which barber apps take deposits?
Booksy, theCut, Square Appointments, Fresha, StyleSeat, GlossGenius, Setmore Pro, Timely, SimplyBook.me and startbuddi all offer deposits or prepayment, but only in the countries where their payments work. In Nigeria, startbuddi takes deposits by card, transfer, USSD or mobile money through Paystack.
Can a booking app handle walk-ins?
Some can. theCut lets a shop assign walk-ins to available barbers, and Vagaro sells a Check-In App add-on. Others, including startbuddi, let you add a walk-in as a booking but have no live queue.
How do chair renters use a booking app?
Usually each renter has their own account and their own client list, and the owner has a shop view. theCut's free Shop account includes booth rent tracking, while Booksy and Vagaro charge per extra user or calendar. Agree who pays for the app before everyone sets up.
