Most late payments start with an invoice that leaves the client asking a question: who do I pay, how much, by when, and how. This template answers all four before they have to ask.
It follows the order clients read an invoice in: who it is from, who it is for, what it covers, what is owed, and how to pay. Replace everything in square brackets.

What must an invoice include?
Your business details, the client's details, a unique invoice number, the date, the due date, what the work was, the amounts (with tax if you charge it) and how to pay. The rules on what a tax invoice must show vary by country, so check with a local accountant.

How should I number my invoices?
Use one simple sequence and never reuse a number, for example INV-0001, INV-0002. Clients and accountants use the number to match payments.
